Kate Williams, our Perinatal National Champion, and Hayley Brown, CBT Therapist here at Everyturn and CPD Coordinator, have been working on the creation of a perinatal e-learning and best practice guide.

This e-learning and guide was created to equip our colleagues with the best possible knowledge to support people through the perinatal period.

What is the perinatal period?

The perinatal period exists from pregnancy, all the way up until the baby’s second birthday. The perinatal period, especially perinatal mental health is incredibly important, with 1 in 4 women being affected by perinatal mental ill health. Also, approximately 10% of fathers experience perinatal mental illness, with rates increasing to 25-50% if the mother is also affected.

What our colleagues will learn in the e-learning:

  • An introduction and risk identification in perinatal clients
  • Barriers to engagement and cultural and individual differences
  • Perinatal presentations
  • Talking Therapies best-practice for perinatal clients

Lets hear from Kate Williams, Perinatal National Champion here at Everyturn:

“Pregnancy and starting a family can be the most magical and joy-filled time. However, for many people it brings significant challenges.

“Whilst we know that perinatal people experience high rates of common mental health disorders, the access and completion of therapies are low for this group. If left untreated, the impact on both the perinatal person and their child can be enormous. Sadly, suicide is the leading cause of maternal death between 6 weeks and 12 months post child birth.

“As a Talking Therapies service, we are well positioned to support perinatal people. This resource hopes to pull together helpful guidance and information to allow us to deliver the most effective interventions that we know can make a difference.

If even one sentence helps to support a person to engage in therapy and gain a positive outcome from our service, it will have been worth reading!”

Hayley Brown, our CPD coordinator at Everyturn says:

This e-learning is a perfect demonstration of the great work our National Champions do to further best practice in their respective specialisms.

“The challenges perinatal clients face can often vary from those of other populations, and this e-learning supports practitioners to offer the very best experience for this group.
