People like Elizabeth and her husband, Ken. Elizabeth and Ken, who are retired, lived in Yorkshire for over 40 years and moved to Alnwick in March 2021 to be closer to their grandchildren.

At first, Elizabeth and Ken felt daunted at the idea of fitting in to a new community, as they had lost some confidence in socialising after the pandemic restrictions.

But after finding the Northumberland Recovery College’s ‘Wellbeing Book Club’ in Alnwick through a Facebook post shared by her new GP surgery, Elizabeth decided to go along.

Elizabeth really enjoyed it and has gone on to meet up with other participants socially.

Elizabeth also encouraged Ken, a former technical drawing teacher, to go to the Recovery College’s ‘Express Yourself’ arts taster session, where he made watercolour Christmas cards and met new people.

Elizabeth said:

We have both thoroughly enjoyed our sessions with the Recovery College and are glad we found it.

It has enabled us to meet up with others from the community in a safe setting, as well as introducing us to topics that are fun, pleasurable, and interesting.

Moving into a new area was quite a daunting task after 40 years, especially after lockdown, and the Recovery College has helped our sense of wellbeing enormously.

We’re proud to lead Northumberland Recovery College, which makes a huge impact on the wellbeing of people living in Northumberland, like Elizabeth and Ken.

The Recovery College runs free workshops, courses, and activities for adults in Northumberland who are looking to improve their wellbeing and meet new people.

Courses are delivered both in-person, in local community venues, and online.

The Recovery College offers a range of courses to suit everyone, including Mindful Photography, a Wellbeing Book Club, and Gentle Yoga for Long-Covid.
