Access Talking Therapies

Get Urgent Help

Episode 5

TW: domestic abuse

In this episode, Julia, CBT Therapist and EMDR Practitioner at Everyturn, and Emily, Chief Commercial Officer at Everyturn, have an insightful conversation about EMDR therapy – what it is, how it works, and where to access support.

“Our bodies actually remember bad things that happen to us, and consequently, those traumatic memories stay in the short term memory ‘filing cabinet’, and that’s why they have that real sort of immediacy. It can feel as though they are still happening, or happening right now.”

“That’s what EMDR does – it works with those memories and helps to get them along the ‘conveyor belt’ and filed away in the long term memory ‘filing cabinet’.”

Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) is a recommended treatment for people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

When a person experiences a traumatic event, it can be difficult for the brain to process information because of such strong overwhelming emotions experienced. EMDR works by helping the brain to process traumatic memories and file them away into the past.
