Talking therapies and counselling in Wirral

Approximately, at least one in four of us will experience some type of mental health issue each year in England. If you feel like you are struggling to cope with your mental health and are looking for support, we are here to help you and you are not alone.

If you are experiencing a mental health issue and would like some support from a qualified therapist in the Wirral area, our talking therapy Wirral service provides a free and confidential mental health service, available to anyone who is aged 16+ and registered with a GP in the Wirral. This includes Birkenhead, West Kirby and Wallasey.

The type of therapy you need depends on how you’re feeling, and the mental health problem you’re experiencing. At Everyturn, we provide a range of therapies that you can access through a self-referral via our chatbot.. Once you have submitted your referral, a member of our friendly patient coordinator team will contact you to discuss with you which of our available therapies is best suited to you.

What we can help with

If you’re struggling with your mental health and are located in the Wirral, our NHS Wirral Talking Therapies mental health service can support you by offering a range of therapies with a trained therapist. We accept self-referrals and referrals from GPs and other health professionals, and we can help you find the right therapist to support you if you are experiencing a common mental health problem, such as:

  • Low mood or depression: it’s normal to feel sad at some point in your life, but if your feelings of sadness continue for long periods of time and if they impact different aspects of your life, it could be a sign of low mood or depression.
  • Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD): GAD is a very common type of anxiety which might make you feel more anxious or worry about what might happen in unpredictable and uncertain situations, with some physical symptoms too.
  • Health anxiety: if you worry excessively about one particular illness or about lots of different health problems,, it could be a sign of health anxiety.
  • Social anxiety disorder: also known as social phobia, social anxiety is one of the most common forms of anxiety and you may have an overwhelming fear of social situations which impacts on everyday life.
  • Stress: high levels of stress over an extended period of time can be bad for your wellbeing and may take a toll on your body, which might make you feel like you are struggling to cope with the pressures of life.
  • Panic disorder and agoraphobia: both related to anxiety, panic disorder and agoraphobia can increase your anxiety and worsen the symptoms, but agoraphobia can be experienced with or without panic attacks.
  • Phobias: having a phobia means that you have an intense fear of a certain object or situation and is a common type of anxiety which may stop you from doing activities that you enjoy or are important to you.
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD): this is a very distressing problem which can vary from person to person, but if you have OCD, you will experience obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours that interfere with your daily life.
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): a type of anxiety, PTSD can develop if you have endured certain distressing experiences, like being in a car crash, having a traumatic childbirth or being assaulted, sexually assaulted or abused.
  • Mental health problems related to long-term health conditions: if you have a long term health condition like diabetes, chronic pain or heart conditions, you may feel like they significantly impact your mental health and we can help you develop ways to cope and manage your feelings.

There are several other mental health issues that you may be experiencing related to bereavement and loss, relationship difficulties, family problems, body dysmorphia and struggles during pregnancy or after birth, which may impact your life significantly. The therapies we offer

Our Wirral service offers a range of talking therapies, counselling, information, and support, depending on your personal situation. Talking therapies can help you to understand and work through difficult feelings and to develop strategies for coping better with a qualified therapist.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): Learn more

We offer several forms of CBT, including sessions with a therapist, digital CBT which you can access from a device with a WiFi connection and guided CBT self-help through which you will be supported by a psychological wellbeing practitioner (PWP).

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) Learn more

An evidence-based therapy for depression blends part of CBT with Mindfulness Meditation, and the aim of MBCT is to develop a better understanding of how your mind works.

Counselling for depression Learn more

This is a person-centred form of counselling for depression and is an evidence-based treatment which targets the emotional problems underlying depression.

Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) Learn more

This is a recommended treatment for people suffering from PTSD and EMDR uses bi-lateral stimulation to help the brain to process traumatic memories and file them away.

Interpersonal therapy (IPT) Learn more

This helps us to identify the links between the symptoms of depression and our relationships and IPT focuses on conflict with another person, adjustment to life changes, grief and bereavement and difficulties in starting or maintaining relationships.

Couples therapy for depression (CTD) Learn more

Helping couples how to understand how difficulties in their relationship can contribute to depression in one or both partners, CTD aims to help you work together on the things that are causing unhappiness.

Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT) Learn more

This is a type of talking therapy that helps you understand yourself and others better. It helps you see how you act in relationships, how this affects your feelings, and find better ways to respond.

The best therapy for you will depend on your personal situation and how you are feeling. If you are registered to a GP in the Wirral, our mental health service can offer counselling sessions with experienced counsellors and qualified therapists who are here to support you through your mental health issue.

Employment support

Our specialist employment advisors in the Wirral can support you if your mental health has been affected by work or vice versa. We can help if you:

  • Want to get back into work.
  • Have been made redundant.
  • Would like support with your job search or finding volunteering or training opportunities.
  • Are experiencing other work-related problems.

Our employment advisor support service  is available to anyone who is having therapy with NHS Wirral Talking Therapies through Everyturn.

At a drop-in, members of our team are on-hand to give  information about the service we offer, the types of therapies we provide, and to answer any queries or questions.

Our team can also help you to  self-refer to our service, if that would be useful for you.

Our drop-ins take place as follows:

  • Last Monday of the month, 11.00am-1.00pm, at Wirral Change, St Laurence’s School, St Laurence Drive, Birkenhead,
  • Last Friday of the month, 1.30pm-3.30pm, at Tomorrow’s Women, Beckwith Street East, Birkenhead
  • Second Friday of the month, 11-1pm, Marine Lake Wellbeing Centre, Age UK Café, Orrysdale Road, West Kirby, CH48 5AA
  • Heart4Refugees: Third Friday, 12:30-2:30pm, Grange Baptist Church, Whetstone Lane, Birkenhead, CH41 2QS
Wirral Active Minds Learn more

Wirral Active Minds is a scheme to help Wirral residents to improve their physical and mental health.

This scheme is a partnership between NHS Wirral Talking Therapies and Wirral Council.

Wirral Active Minds can support you when you have taken the first steps to talk more about your mental health with qualified therapists through NHS Wirral Talking Therapies. You will receive a Wirral Active Minds ‘passport’, to help you to take part in a wide range of free or affordable activities that will help if you’re feeling low.

Wirral Active Minds helps people to explore more, move more, connect more, and discover more on their doorstep.
